Deconstructing the Wild - Child

ABSTRACT

This Learning Unit aims to understand whether the history of the construction of fantasy and creativity as related to the “exotic Other” still informs current methods and ideas of museum, gallery and art education practices (not only) for children – and if so, how these connections work. We propose to look at parts of this history through our own experiences and ideas in respect to art education for children. The figure of “the child” as innocent, in need for guidance and protection with an embedded potential for fantasy and creativity that should not be spoiled by “civilization” is in itself a construction that underpins the concepts of Child Art of the 19th and 20th century and might still unconsciously inform our own ideas and approaches.

This Learning Unit consists of a sequel of four workshops that are connected with each other and build upon each other’s content, but can also be used separately or partly. The Learning Unit provides working suggestions; as well as texts and archival material, for these workshops.

To work with this , the best way is to establish a working group that meets four times in the timeframe of two to four months (this could be a semester course or a supervision group of arts education lecturers par- allel to their teaching, or a group working in the context of arts educators/museum educators training or a private group of critical arts educators who wish to go through a process of self-reflection/history learning, or a group of arts/museum educators who wish to become critical arts/museum educators).

The hosts of these workshop sessions should take the responsibility to prepare the content, to provide a safe-space atmosphere (including finger-food, fruits, water…, taking care of breaks, time, materials, organ- isation and preparatory communication, meeting space) and communication roles including the documen- tation of the process.

The Viennese case might serve as an example to help to discuss the connection between local and global histories, the personal and the political histories, the practices and the discourses. The LU seeks to encourage different art educators to find ways of working on these seams in their specific contexts as well through the Viennese example.

Lesotho's Journey in Literature: Tracing the Topography of Lesotho's Literary Landscape

The story is a recount of the origins of Sesotho orthography as influenced by Swiss French missionaries and the state of the language past and present.

Lineo Segoete is a human Bobcat who engages in various forms of storytelling including writing, research and photography. Her restlessness makes her a wanderer of places and the head spaces of other Homo sapiens. Her curiosity makes her a lifelong scholar who likes love and beautiful things but is also a cynic and questioner of things. She is co-founder and co-director of Ba re e ne re Literary Arts, the first literary arts organisation of its kind in the Kingdom of Lesotho as well as a 2016/2017 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow from Vanderbilt University in the US of A.

Hans Tietze was an Austrian art historian born in 1880 in Praha, he died in 1954 in New York. Coming from an assimilated Jewish family he and his wife Erica Tietze-Conrat, who was the first female graduate of art history in Vienna, were forced to exile after the "Anschluss" (occupation by Nazi Germany) in 1938. Tietze was not only a multifaceted art historian and cultural scientist but also active for the educational department of the new Austrian republic from 1918 till 1925 and sympathizing with the social-democratic government of “Red” Vienna´s municipality. Helping to reorganise art museums after WWI and teaching art in social housing buildings for working class people he shared the Austro marxist utopia of public learning through art; Erica Tietze-Conrat lectured on the way of image interpretation she learned from the artist and later important Bauhaus lecturer Johannes Itten in his courses in Vienna. An important figure in this context is the artist educator Franz Cizek, who invented the Child Art Movement in Vienna, opening the Juvenile Art Class in 1897. Starting with a research on this environment/network of reform pedagogy and popular art education through art as a part of (socialist?) utopia, we ask where and how the ideas and construction of “the (primitive) other” are interwoven with the figure of “the child”. We ask how exactly these construction of “the other” via primitivism and exoticism are a basic ground for social utopia in Vienna. We will follow the hints in published and otherwise documented statements on pedagogical concepts and didactic image policies in exhibition catalogues promoting an idea of modern art “for all”. We will follow the writings of early art educators and search for the appearance of these constructions in contemporary art education concepts.

These (socialist) utopias of the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries are connected with the idea of the "new human being" (der “neue Mensch”): Via education on hygiene, self-care, nature experiences (“Naturfreunde”) and eugenics (qualitative birth control) people should learn to optimise themselves for their own good and the development of a better man-kind. These kind of self-improvement fantasies provided junctions with the concepts of Racism and National Socialism. The art education activities and the concepts of “culture learning” through aesthetics and architecture played a crucial role in these socialist educational programs. Hence we seek to contextualise our research within broader aesthetic/educational focus of the Social Democratic Vienna policies in the 1920/early 1930s, as for example represented in Otto Neurath's Isotype symbolic language and its embedded construction of social stereotypes.

Looking also at the social housing approaches of Vienna in the 1920s we try to find connections to Allende's Chile of the early 1970s where fascism put an abrupt end to these kind of aesthetic and social utopia, as well. The research project we will include artist Leonardo Portus to reconstruct traces of hidden visual utopia of this time in Vienna and Chile.

The practice based case studies include e.g. the foundation of the institute of arts education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1941 by the Nazis and the history of a school in Vienna that was established as “model” school for working class female students in the 1920, following a social-democratic paradigm of learning through arts and creativity. During the Nazi time this school came to be established as a Nazi elite school for girls (NAPOLA) also with an focus on arts education. After WWII it became again a model school for “learning through art” by the social democratic government in Vienna and it holds this unique position till today.

As we are all working and living in Vienna, our research mainly focuses on Vienna. Starting from there we are interested in the intertwining of “forsaken” social utopias embedded e.g. in the social housing buildings and their artistic ornamentation. Through this Déjà-vu like associations we connect Chile with Vienna and the 1920s with the 1970s. The timeline tries to frame our main focus with basic information on the development of arts-education and it main events, figures and institutions both in Chile and in Vienna.

Starting with this story we propose to follow these kind of forgotten, abandoned,"forsaken” utopia - embedded e.g. in the architecture of the social housing buildings of Vienna itself - and its contradictory and problematic ideas of constructing the "new human being" from the Vienna of the 1920s to Allendes Chile of the early 1970s were fascism put an abrupt end to these kind of aesthetic and social utopia. In the practice and arts based context of the research project we will include artist Leonardo Portus to reconstruct traces of hidden visual utopia of this time in Vienna and Chile.
Starting from a mapping of the (partly forgotten) pre-fascist scene of arts education in Vienna the research will focus on continuations of modern utopian approaches between the time before and after fascism and during fascism /nazi time. The case studies include e.g. the foundation of the institute of arts education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1941 by the Nazis and the history of a school in Vienna that was established as “model” school for working class female students in the 1920, following a social-democratic paradigm of learning through arts and creativity. During the Nazi time this school came to be established as a Nazi elite school for girls (NAPOLA) also with an focus on arts education. After WWII it became again a model school for “learning through art” by the social democratic government in Vienna and it holds this unique position till today. People living in social housing projects in Vienna and Chile, students and teachers of the Institute of Arts Education and students and teachers of this school in Vienna will be included in the practice based research phase of the project.
