Symposium in Zurich at Shedalle

The symposium intertwining hi/stories of arts education took place in June 2018 in Zürich, Switzerland. The symposium invited students, art educators, researchers and cultural producers to reflect on the histories of education in and through art.

Each day of the symposium started with a participatory activation of the Un/Chrono/Logical Timeline. Results of each session were documented and displayed in the space. During first two days of the symposium local guests and invited international members of the intertwining hi/stories cluster gave lectures on different subjects under the common theme «Arts Education and Coloniality». The lectures section was concluded by a panel discussion «Making Time for intertwining hi/stories in Swiss Arts Education». On the third day of the symposium the public was invited to challange gathered knowleges and hi/stories participating in a variety of open parcours workshop sessions with a common theme of «Travels And Tensions Of Critical Pedagogies».

Last two days of the symposium were dedicated to local students of Master in Arts Education. In the form of closed workshops students could explore more in-depth the recurring themes of the symposium and produce their own interpretations and conclusions in forms of collages, photographs, video recordings, poems, silk-screen prints and others.

For invited intertwining hi/stories members the symposium was an opportunity to try out drafts of their Learning Units.

The symposium invites students, art educators, researchers and cultural producers to reflect on the histories of education in and through art. The symposium emphasizes the fact that historiography in arts education means referring to a plurality of hi/stories as perceived from different geopolitical perspectives. Presenting international and Swiss historical case studies, the aim of the gathering is to discuss: how are these hi/stories, their relations and intertwinings relevant for the development of current practice in arts education?

Researchers working on arts education histories and their global connections and relations in the framework of the project intertwining hi/stories of arts education will present and discuss their case studies in lectures and workshops. A panel with lecturers from Swiss universities will discuss the relevance of historical knowledge in international perspectives for training in art education in Switzerland.

The project intertwining hi/stories of arts education aims to generate learning resources for professional development. The symposium and the class for MA students in Arts Education in Basle, Bern, Lucerne and Zurich connected to it invite participants to draw on the research for a reflection of their own practice and to experiment with a first set of learning cards in a game format.

Meeting in Maseru - January 2018

In January 2018 two clusters: intertwining hi/stories and the Africa Cluster met in Maseru, Lesotho. The main purpose for the intertwining hi/stories to meet, was to work on the educational tools of the cluster: the Learning Units and the Un/Chrono/Logical Timeline.

The meeting coincided with the 5th Ba re e ne re Literature Festival in Maseru. The visiting Another Roadmap members were invited to share knowledges and practices with Lesotho’s arts community as part of a public festival programme. They also had an opportunity co-create site-specific artworks with local artists in Maseru. Through their active engagement with each other and local community members in Maseru, Another Roadmap representatives further strengthened partnerships across regions and re-centered multifaceted Southern African histories and perspectives in arts education practice.

On the 20th of January Intertwining HiStories was presented by Karin Schneider and Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa during the Symposium Whose Museum Is It? Questions and Conditions Regarding Museum Mediation in a Global Context in Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf.

Our presentation will offer a first insight into the approach of “Intertwining HiStories“

(http://colivre.net/intertwining-histories) a project of the network Another Roadmap for Arts Education (http://colivre.net/another-roadmap) that seeks to establish a global, multi-vocal understanding of the histories of educating in and through the arts. Certain working groups of this network study histories of arts education and their global overlapping within the context of particular case studies. Our aim is to understand how European concepts of art education, based on the idea of an “Other” in need of education and reform (e.g. the working poor, the colonialized subject) were constructed, transferred to the colonies, but also appropriated and intertwined with local approaches. The project also seeks to trace historical and contemporary counter-narratives to the dominant history and the often surprising intertwining of histories.

Following a general overview on the project, our conference presentation provide two examples: (1) The ongoing research of the Kampala working group into the impact of British colonial governmentality on the establishment and development of formal visual arts and visual arts education in the Uganda Protectorate in the early- and mid-twentieth century and (2) the first starting points of the Viennese working group’s research into the construction of the figure of the “child” and the “Other” in Viennese discourses on art education in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Bienal de São Paulo Foundation, en el contexto de la 32nd Bienal de São Paulo – INCERTEZA VIVA está colaborando con la Escuela Otra Hoja de Ruta en un programa enfocado en las historias de educación y arte en diferentes contextos, y las metodologías para investigarlas, intervenir en ellas y circularlas como herramientas para el aprendizaje y desaprendizaje.
Miembros de los proyectos en cooperación Intertwining Hi/stories y Africa Cluster desarrollan actividades en el espacio COZINHA en el pabellón de la Bienal, entre el 24 y el 29 de octubre. Abriendo un espacio plural para el intercambio entre experiencias locales e internacionales, se propone generar aprendizajes y desaprendizajes ente artistas, investigadora/es y educadora/es, problematizando la educación artística y su rol social en un ejercicio colectivo.

The Bienal de São Paulo Foundation, in the context of the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo – INCERTEZA VIVA, [Live Uncertainty], is collaborating with Another Roadmap School in a program addressing art and education histories from diverse specific contexts and the methodologies to research, intervene and circulate them as tools for learning and unlearning in contemporary public spheres.

Members of the Intertwining Hi/stories Cluster and the Africa Cluster develop diverse activities between October 24 and 29, at the space COZINHA in the Bienal Pavilion. During this week, a plural space for interlocution between local experiences and international dialogues seeks to establish a learning environment between artists, researchers and educators to problematize arts education and its social role, as a collective exercise.
