ABSTRACT

Art’s power to enable a reimagination of the present is behind the possibly utopic title of this Learning Unit. By inviting you to think about what could happen when visual relations are reshaped within a picture frame, we ask you to layer on a contrapuntal voice to a disempowered character now enplaced in a position to talk back. The visual peg for the exercise is Filipino painter Juan Luna’s oil painting, España y Filipinas (c. 1888).

ABSTRACT

This learning unit was designed for use by 1^st year diploma level visual communication students at a tertiary-level art and design school in Uganda.

Its aim was to introduce the students to publication design (as specified in the curriculum) while at the same time engaging them in critical readings of the history of art and design in Uganda.

We hoped to increase their ability to question the status quo in the fields of culture, society, politics and education; to assess and manage their own learning; and to engage with others outside the project with this work.

Students were introduced to the writings of Margaret Trowell (1904-1989). Trowell founded the first formal European-style school of Art and Design in the Uganda Protectorate in the 1930s. (Supplied separately.)

The publication design module, into which the learning unit was embedded, was delivered in two 2-hour lessons per week over 15 weeks between September 2017 - May 2018.

ABSTRACT

This Learning Unit is intended to provide activity plans for students or other learners in late primary to high school, though they can be shared with any group of people with moderate literacy skills. The activities may be used in classrooms or workshop settings and can be used to develop and enhance critical dimension of the literacy skills of learners. By this we mean, the activities encourage leaners to identify and reflect on the biases encoded in textual and and visual information.

Reference texts and item selections are intended to activate the archive, juxtapose the past and present and incite questions for the student. Through their participation learners will ideally improve their skills for analysing key details in reference materials and learn cues that support the breakdown of meaning. By exposing the positionality of information, learners will be in a better position to think critically about an item’s message and relevance.
